Allow me to clarify. I was not implying that every situation the waitress mentions in this article is abuse. In fact, few if any are. Some of her customers' requests are valid, but admittingly others are simply nonsense. People asking for separate checks could have a good reason - it could be a business related meal which would require a separate check. It could also be because they're too lazy to break it down on their own. Complaining that food wasn't prepared properly is perfectly acceptable - how would the chef know anything was wrong if the customer didn't speak up? However, publicy reaming your waitress or waiter out over it in front of a crowded restaraunt is not acceptable (this would be one example of the abuse I referred to in my original post). Also note, if it didn't taste right after the third mouthful, that would be the time to say something. Speaking up after you've eaten the entire meal seems a little absurd, no? Folks that do this are often times fishing to get a free meal. I don't care what anyone says, the "nonsense" mentioned in this article does occur, especially in restaraunts on the island. I could go on and on... but the bottom line is that this article was meant to be entertaining, and I certainly was entertained. Seems like some people need to lighten up just a bit...

Marvels Donuts..Yum!!! BTW- there's no need to toss any un-eaten donuts (fried with cinnamon sugar.) You can nuke them about 10 seconds-depending on your microwave. They will be warm. soft and still quite good. We've done this numerous times even with day old and two days old. They are of course at their very best, still warm from the store. Also, Entemmans crumb cake can be frozen, then taken out and placed on table, the night before, in the morning, it's fresh as can be. Always best to freeze it fresh. Bought some on sale before we went on our 2 week vacation. The two frozen ones were eaten the second week. Marvels is a must have if you're on LBI. We had to have them three times! On pack up and leave Sat. when you're rushing to get out of your rental, the nuked donuts and a cup of coffee are quick "warm" breakfast.

Marvel's has good donuts because they make them right there and sell them hot out of the fryer. Two cautions though - do not buy them to eat later. Their magic wears off after 15 minutes of being out of the fryer. If they cool down they are no better than Entemann's packaged product. Also you must go early in the morning (like no later than 9) or else you risk that the machine is no longer running, in which case they are selling donuts that are an hour or so old and are no longer in their *magic* period. The second point is that the magic donuts are only the small round ones with holes (plain, powdered sugar, or cinnamon sugar). All the filled, or larger pastries don't come out of the *magic* machine and are already room temperature, therefore rather ordinary.

From JB:
“Having never worked as a waiter, I have no first hand experience but I will say that I'd never be able to handle some of the nonsense that these folks deal with on a day to day basis. I've witnessed customers practically abuse waitstaff because they feel that they're entitled to do so. This waitress's article took what can be trying experiences and gave them a comical twist. Anyone who was offended should take another look at themself and their own habits while eating out. Chances are that they're one the people this waitress was referring to - the people who annoy the rest of us at nearby tables who are forced to bear witness to their nonsense”
What ‘nonsense’??? That the customers have the audacity to ask for separate checks, or complain when their food is not prepared correctly? Is it considered ‘abuse’ that someone tips below 20 %, or pays the check with a large bill. Should we all feel sorry for the poor little dear because she has to suffer fools who choose to use a calculator to figure their tips? She’s not complaining because someone swore at her or called her a nasty name, she’s complaining because the customers aren’t stacking the dishes to her liking when they’re nice enough to hand them to her so she doesn’t have to reach across the table.
If her complaints were legitimate, I’d defend her, but they are petty, intolerant, and not at all well-suited to the service industry.

BST,
If you look at the responses here, it was only you, the poster named "get a life" and JB that spoke out in "favor" of the commentary. My reply was only to point out that the three of you feel differently then those that responded to the Sandpaper in the hard copy. I am guessing that next weeks Sandpaper will have responses from others that feel like you, in response to them. Therefore, we haven't heard the end of this yet:-)

Maybe someone could clear something up for me. I keep reading that a "nor easter" comes from the northeast along the Atlantic. Then later in articles it states that they start in the Gulf and follow the Gulf Stream. So would the storm coming FROM the northeast or going TO the northeast.Sorry to sound so dumb but I have not been able to get a solid answer. Thanks!

To add my $.02... while the storm will generally track from southwest to northeast or from east to west, the term describes the winds on the side of the storm that hits the area. When the northern or western part of the storm hits us the winds are coming from the northeast due to the direction of rotation around the storm center. So when the center of the storm passes to the south or east of LBI we get a nor'easter.

The use of an asterisk to frame a word is a commonly accepted way to indicate the word is in italics, when no such options (bolding, italics, underlining) is available when typing on a forum.
By using it, it implies emphasis on that word. And since the person was asking if the winds came FROM or were going TO the Northeast, that's the way I chose to emphasise the answer.
It was deliberate. There is *nothing* wrong with your browser!

Answer Man, I've noticed that you occasionally seem to place emphasis on words in your postings by typing what, at least on my browser, appears as astericks immediately before and after the emphasized word...For instance, in your post about the nor'easter those astericks appear in front of and behind the word "from"...Are you actually placing emphasis on certain words or is it some strange browser effect? Love to Mom, whose curiosity sometimes gets the better of her.

I believe that those have to do with ChowderFest. There are more personalized engraved pavers in Bicentennial Park in Beach Haven. Call the town to inquire about them. (609) 492-0111

I generally tip 18-20% if the service was good less if bad. Bad to me = food served luke warm - like it was sitting in the kitchen a while before it was brought to the table, having to request a drink refill or waiting more than 10 minutes for a refill. Not stopping by the table at least 1 time to make sure everything is ok. I never complain about the quality of the food - the wait staff do not cook the food, so no point in complaining to them.

I read that commentary and it completely ticked me off. I tip my server based on the quality of service I receive. Example, if my drink is completely empty for too long, I will tip less. Also, 20% is not the standard tip....it is 15%. I will tip higher for good service and tip lower for poor service. It is just like any other job in America where your raises are based on the quality of your work. Less money for a poor job. Maybe she should go above and beyond if she expects to be tipped well. Also, most people will treat you exactly as the way you are treating them. She should look in the mirror. And last but not least if she doesn't like her job, she should find a new one!!!!!

I'm inclined to agree with Tim. Sure, there are some boorish diners, but the only time in my life that I've ever stiffed a waitress was when my wife was served a glass of red wine that was chilled and then was given a major league hard time when we she asked for red wine at room temperature!

Well, based on her suggestions in the Page 14 link above, I would say that she’s a spoiled brat who has a ridiculous sense of entitlement, who thinks it is the customer’s job to please the server, and who has no problem insulting the very people who are paying her salary.
Here are a few choice selections;
- If you intend to ask for separate checks, please tell me before you order so I know in advance you’re going to be a pain in the ass. - Never pay with a denomination that exceeds the amount of your check by more than $20… - Don’t tell me how great everything was, and that I was the “best server ever” unless you plan on tipping me above 20 percent. - Only stingy people require a cell phone calculator to figure out the tip. - Don’t complain about the food at the end of your meal… - Don’t complain about the temperature of the restaurant… - Do not complain about the strength of your drink…
She wouldn’t last long as one of my employees.

No - you must get it from NYC. TRANSPORT AZUMAH - ROUTE TAZ10
transportazumah,com/TAZ10
Note, if at first, they dont answer the phone for a reservation, keep trying-they WILL answer. My cousin took this bus two weeks ago- no problem. Be careful if taking the bus from LBI to NYC, if the driver does not see a crowd- he may just pass you by. Wave him down as you see the bus coming. PS- they sometimes use vans if there are not enough passengers to reserve a bus. Good Luck.

Yes the flies were bad on Fri. (July 11th) but the flies were also in town as well, not only Holgate. No wind! You need that breeze to carry them away. I sat with my sand chair at the ocean's edge and it was not bad at all; but up on the hot sand and near the jetty, they were like vultures-really bad. We had to take the kids home in mid-late afternoon. Considering that we were there for two weeks and got to the beach every day, save one due to too cool weather, we were very lucky. In all the many, many years, we've been going to Holgate, I can count on one hand, the number of times, the flies chased us off the beach.

Cassidy's buys directly from the commercial boats and supplies many of the seafood to the island's restaurants. Therefore, the supply of seafood rotates on a regular basis and hence remains fresh. I've never compared prices, because in the other two establishments that you mentioned there is always an odor other than that of the "Sea". Fresh fish smells like the ocean.

Very good food especially for the North end of the island which has limited choices.
I've been eating there on vacation for 20+ years. On a recent visit he made the "Guy" pancake for my 6 year old son and a mermaid pancake for my 4 year old daughter. They loved them.
They make a pretty good cheese steak for lunch although it can get a little soggy if you take it to go which is what I normally do.

I should have also mentioned the Lex Mex is very relaxed and casual, with TV screens showing surfing tornament footage. Seems more like a lunch place. In fact I recommend it more for lunch than dinner because the prices are slightly cheaper then and the only difference is you don't get the sides of black beens and spiced rice (so what, who eats that anyway). And you still get the chips and homemade salsa which is really fresh and really good!

I can't yet comment on Surf City Hotel, but will check on it soon also.
But yes, JPG. I too have to give a big thumbs up to Lex Mex since you brought it up. This one is a hidden gem. The best item on the menu -- the fish taco! You are all saying "ewwww" right now, but this thing is fantastic! And it probably is misnamed. It is not anything like the fish tacos that I've had at many mexican joints I've eaten at on the west coast. I've become so addicted to these that I have cravings for it. They must be putting heroine in it or something. It is grilled and blackened talapia that is juicy and moist, on a soft flour tortilla with shredded raw cabbage (for texture and crunch) and what they call a honey-jalapino sauce (don't know why, the sauce is neither sweet nor spicy - more like a tarter sauce with cilantro and green pepper). The description doesn't sound nearly as good as they taste. Also, my wife claims the taco salad is the best she's ever had. It's a small place and seating is limited, so we usually do take-out. But be advised, this is NOT at all what I would call *authentic* mexican food. It's more like LBI food with a mexican-esk kind of slant. But really tasty none-the-less and reasonably priced. (Now I've done it, I've given away one of LBIs best kept secrets)
Dinah's rating: 4.5 out of 5 jalapinos!

It is a long story, but basically it was named for Thomas Lovelady. He owned a ten-acre island in the bay known as Lovelady Island (the island disappeared in the 1950's). When the nearby Life Saving Station was created in the 1800's on LBI, the area became known as Loveladies.
I highly recommend John Bailey Lloyd's three incredible LBI history books for even more details!

The history of town names on LBI is fascinaing, and is well documented by the late historian John Bailey Lloyd. To quote John:
"In the 1950s there was a Beach Haven South on Beach Haven's border..."
I would suspect that only an old-timer would remember that!

There is not an outdoor smoking ordinance NJ yet. Because of the exchange rate, I've noticed more European, and Asian tourists this year. If you've ever been in another country, you'll notice that they all smoke more than we do. Just move upwind -- we need the influx of their money. We need them spending here and not us over there...

There are sections of the beach in Belmar (every other block) where smoking is prohibited and people are fined by roving patrols. It is well signed and if you are a non smoker, it's a pleasure. Not to mention all of the butts that you are not forced to walk through or watch smokers "cover" them like the beach is one big ashtray. Given what's focused on by the local governments, I can't imagine anything as progressive as this being passed on the island.

Ours did turn out to be an electrical problem in the switchplate near the front door. They turned off the power to that area for the night and an electrician was to come the next day (Sat). Scary part was that we were on the upper floor, and the front door was the only exit. We will travel with one of those portable fire ladders from now one when renting. Escaping with 2 toddlers is frightening. Luckily, all was well.

Limo Guy- my posting was in jest. Geez! Lucky you- 3rd generation year round islander. Lucky for us wannabees that you do not own the ocean or the beautiful beaches, nor can you claim ownership of the magnificent sunsets by the bay or the promise of a warm sunny day as the sun rises over the ocean. No, I've never done the 18 mile crawl, but I did get to see all the babies in our family as they came along, crawl to the water's edge, lift their hands in wonder-"what's this stuff on my hand?". Now that's Love on the Beach!! :)

Not so JoAnne-the beach checkers came right into the water. We had badges, so that was no problem. BTW- the water was really cold, so running in to avoid the checkers might put the less hearty into shock. Having visited some other beaches along the shore, the badge fee is well worth it on LBI.

Subject: Neighbors from %%&^$%^
I was wondering if anyone knows of anywhere to report activities at my neighbors house that are probably against township ordinances. So far, I've heard of fights (physical), tinkling on the bushes in plain sight as well as sitting in a pool with no clothes on. They also yell profanities at each other all day long, play music loud and late at night, and pick fights with the renters and kids on the block. Other neighbors have called the police a few times, but short of reporting a specific incident, does the LB police take complaints about these types of things so they can patrol more often?
To Respond or to View the Question with all answers, Click Here Most Recent Answer Submitted By Sandpiper on July 14, 2008
Muriel- you say they inherited the house from Granny...once the novelty wears off, the bills start rolling in, maintenance needing to be done etc., these neighbors hopefully will soon tire of it... or run out of the wherewithal to maintain it. I realize that is a down the road solution and doesn't help you now, but I do believe these people will not last long. BTW, Muriel, I did not perceive the first response or Saul's response as sarcastic- just common sense answers. Videotaping these creeps peeing in the bushes or committing other infractions: violating noise ordinances, disturbing the peace, harassment etc.will be proof positive for the police. I know you must be afraid of retribution, so it might be a good idea to organize a block watch with other owners. You could try talking to these people first, the first step is always to give someone a chance. Maybe it's their guests that are going overboard. Explain your situation and ask what can be done to come to a happy medium. (It does seem unlikely, from what you describe that you will come away with any satisfaction, but at least you can try) . If that fails, hopefully these people work and live a distance away and their visits to the house will wind down. Good Luck. I know if I were renting next door, I'd be livid.

We have rented homes that had beach chairs and umbrellas available, but I prefer my own stuff. Sometimes the chairs &/or umbrellas looked like they were well-worn, and I wouldn't want to use them in case they broke, etc. The current place we are renting recently started providing badges (yippee) and have bikes to use--a real bonus for us, because we always brought our own. Okay - just got back from our dinner. We arrived just after six and it wasn't crowded at all. Our waiter was very nice, fun to chat with and explained everything there is to know about the seafood suppliers at the Jersey shore. Dinner was good - we started with coconut shrimp. Only 6 shrimp, but the dipping sauce was nice and spicy/sweet. my husband originally ordered a prime rib, but they are only available thru Sunday so he ordered a lobster tail instead. It was good, but very small. My seafood combination was terrific (I had saffron rice and very nicely seasoned veggies on the side) and my daughter enjoyed her burger and fries. So overall, a positive experience for us :)

Thanks for all the responses, but this was not the kind of alarm you unplug-it was actually wired throughout the house-no battery you could remove, no plug. An electrician had to come and replace wiring throughout the house. We also could not find the fuse on the fuse box-go figure. It was wired like Fort Knox. The realtor said the electrician was the only one who could repair the situation.

I have electronic smoke detectors in my house. I had one go off at 4:00 am a year or so ago (the battery was dead). All I had to do was to unplug the wiring and remove the battery until the next morning when I was able to run out and buy a new battery. I learned a lesson that evening, always remember to check the light on the smoke detector - if it is flashing red, the battery is dead and the alarm will go off and always remember to have a supply of 9 volt batteries on hand so you can replace it right away.
